Today Gloria and I conducted out interviews today. Some of our thoughts:

All of the students we selected demonstrated a strong willingness to engage (agency) with us on a one on one level. All of the students said that they felt valued and that their ideas were valued in the class and in discussions with their peers.

We provided all of the students with a pre-assembled spool toy, for the sake of time but, two students struggled with understanding how the rubber band could be used to power the toy. They would stretch it and wrap it around the different components without thinking that it could be twisted to provide the power. We let them struggle with the concept for about 10 minutes before interjecting a leading question because, though we did not want to teach or lead them, we wanted to get to the point where we could finish the task.

Only one of our students decided to use the tape measure instead of the other measuring methods. When asked why he decided to use the tape measure, he said because it has feet and inches on it. To him it was the more appropriate way to measure when we challenged him to make the toy go between 4 and 5 feet.
