First and Second Grade in Kawana Academy of Arts and Sciences
Academy for Arts and Sciences (KAAS) is a district k-6 elementary charter school that has
a student body of 420 students comprised of: 87% Hispanic students, 70.9% second language
learners, and 90% on free and reduced lunches. The school is now benefiting from a generous 3-year School
Improvement Grant (SIG) focused on developing student reasoning and
discourse. Technology plays a key role
in motivating students to engage in learning. Each student has access to an iPAD and chrome book.
The teachers from the First and Second Lesson Study wanted to develop student use of strategies. The newly adopted textbook has a quick introduction to strategies but students do not have time to develop, internalize, or apply. This Lesson Study looks at utilizing number talk routines to provide opportunities for students to learn and understand these strategies.
