Carolyn Mazanec - Just wanted to say that I'm really impressed with your group's organizational skills/ determinedness. Watching your workflow these past few weeks has been really impressive!! #keepitup

Elizabeth Chou - You've guys done a great job of refining your pitch these past few weeks-remember to keep it short and sweet, aim for around 2 minutes!

I definitely agree with having a high visual to text ratio in your presentation, but make sure to immediately explain your visuals (physically point to them if there are multiple images) once you show the slide. Otherwise, the audience might spend more time trying to figure out what the image is rather than listening. You want to be able to hold and direct the audience's attention.

Alexander Richard - I agree with the above! Simplicity drives clarity to your big and different ideas. To also add, practice makes perfect. Rehearse once, rehearse again, and have fun!

Best of luck with crit today!

Remember my pointers about timekeeping. It's a faithful tool (of many) that will keep larger groups focused on feedback without fatigue. I should also note, the more organized and deliberate you are during crit, the more channeled your feedback will be.

You all are gonna rock it.

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We made an excitement-feasibility graph and a decision matrix and narrowed down our ideas to 8. We came up with a list of criteria for the design.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
We are going to make sketches and maybe mock-ups for the 8 design concepts. We are going to email the community partner to prepare them for tomorrow's meeting.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Client management; we should let them know ahead of time what the purpose of tomorrow's design review is by explaining to them the steps of the design process that we are following.

Carolyn Mazanec - Awesome work, team! I love how you guys are approaching all of this and using the different design activities (i.e. design matrix and excitement-feasibility graph) to really help you guys flesh out your design goals/measures of success. Really great job! For the CP, i think explaining the design thinking behind what you're doing should really help them understand your process and thus, be more open to your ideas that differ from their vision. I think coming with print-outs of your design sketches for each of them and having them interact with those (aka write all over them) will also help. As long as they feel that you are taking their input into account, I think things should go smoothly. Let me know if you need my help scanning/printing anything!

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We've done some more brainstorming, created a new HCW question and are almost complete with brainstorming.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Narrow down our ideas to 4-8 possible solutions. Use our measures of success to determine if our ideas are solving the problems presented.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Prioritizing weeding out ideas and defining measures of success. We don't need to talk to anyone else at this time.

Stand for Tuesday, Jul 28

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Create more specific HCWs. Sketch up/create small mock ups for our decided ideas.
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We identified pain points. Picked 5 HCWs. Sent update to community partner. Brainstormed on 3 of the HCWs. Categorized the ideas in each HCW.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Have a solid list of a few specific how can we statements. Brainstorm and cluster those further and keep developing ideas.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Filtering through the ideas will be difficult. Time is also a constraint.

Daniel Rees Lewis - Time is always a constraint - that's why I'm always talking about prioritizing :)

Stand for Monday, Jul 27

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
-figure out main "pain points"
-Come up with as many solutions as possible for the pain points, and then narrow it down to 4-8 by the end of this week
-Reorganizing information and figuring out categories of our transition

-
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?

What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
-reorganized our chart, identifying problem requirements, and sent update emails to our community partners

What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
-Complexity of our problems (which can hopefully be resolved after reorganization)

Daniel Rees Lewis

Hey Team -- I added a book to your files. Kolko, Exposing the Magic of Design. In section three (p. 59) they give methods for that go beyond the clustering that you have done (Kolko calls this Affinity Diagramming). The stuff on the experience frameworks (starting page 101) might be useful for you guys - basically doing mapping to build an overview of your understanding of context. I would flip through this and have a look.

Stand for Friday, Jul 24

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We created the 30 second brief. We learned that we need to detail and explore all the transitions within the transition phase. We learned a new way to think about our problem and in order to begin brainstorming we need to refine our personas and note similarities and differences between each. We learned about the mentation and side effects of drugs impacting patients post surgery.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Discover and map out pain points- validated and hypothesized ones. Find out what are the top 3 things/areas to learn about next. List and cluster all the different transitions. Send our partners a summary of our progress. Reply to emails.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Synthesizing our large data. We have clustered our data but need to move forward with it by zooming in on the transition phase and create a more detailed journey with what we have learned. We are also looking for different resources to get more information about transplant patients and type II diabetics.

Robert Calvey - Hey team!

Nice work on the synthesis this week. You all have a lot of information and there is certainly a lot to go through. Let us know if the resources Dan and i shared were helpful!

Stand for Thursday, Jul 23

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We focused on our problem space and user and decided our user will be Type II diabetes with liver transplant in transition to independence. We interviewed a user yesterday and are looking for more interviews for our stakeholders. Our users have a lot of pain points within their journey and we have a lot of area to work with (this is the worst case scenario for diabetics).
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
There are only 6,000 per year who have liver transplants in the USA so we need to branch out to get more information from people in a similar area i.e. reach out to other people living with Type II Diabetes. Following up with the community partner about all of our questions and maybe more access to users. Maybe get in touch with the Dementia Augment project as well to see parallels between our two projects.

Carolyn Mazanec - hey team! this all sounds great - i love to see all the progress you've made since yesterday. for the augment team, let me know when you want to talk to them and I can grab Alicia from Delta Lab (upstairs)/ ask when she's free. Also, I can help word that email to the CP if you'd like (up to you) - sounds like that's a great next step!

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We have reached out and interviewed 3 people (diabetics and Hannah). We are continuing to interview more people. We have also done more secondary research as well. Additionally, we added more "dimensions" to our notes, and we have gained more information on where our problem space could be. (we have narrowed it down to the "transitions" and "outpatient" phase.)
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
There will be major team disagreements in regards to project direction. Carolyn will be our mediator.

Alexander Richard - Hey guys, very nice work! Glad to see your extension of research is helping you solidify a direction. I feel it may be helpful to try to keep an open mind and stay judgement free with regards to your teammates thoughts towards an opposing direction. Remember, this is your chance to try new things, learn how and if it works, then evaluate or refine!

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We secured 4 interviews and are waiting to hear back from more. We have color-coded and organised our journey map. We have conducted 1 interview and have 2 scheduled for today.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Our overbearing community partner could be an obstacle, depending on how we define the problem. We should address that issue before it becomes a problem.

Stacy Klingbeil - Cannot wait to see this color-coded journey map and what opportunities and insights come out from it! Great synthesis tool.

Also - I'd like to push you on empathizing with your community partner - just like you have with your users. You're designing for them just as much as for your users. Why are they so hands-on? What chances are they taking with working with us? How long have they been working on this project vs how long we have? HMW use this community partner as an advantage for your team - not an obstacle? I think you're right on point with needing to clearly defining the problem to communicate with them.

Hi gang, I am seeing great momentum. Kudos. I'm definitely digging it!

For tomorrow, we're going to switch things around from last week. This time, I'd like you as a team to take me through where you're at. Meaning, right from where we left off on Tuesday, be prepared to:

1.) Summarize what you've done together in any way you feel is best. As a team, you can diagram it on the whiteboard in real time, build upon a story, or pull together a brief 1-pager with dates and info. Pick one.

2.) Be prepared to talk about your hurdles. I see a lot of goals set and I'm proud to see they're getting accomplished. But there is a lot to learn from small falls. I want to know where the bottlenecks were this past week and challenges you foresee this week. We'll take the time together to organize to overcome them.

3.) Define methods you'd like to strengthen or explore. I read something about persona development and secondary research! Last week we talked about ethnography and field visits. I'm going to let you as a team dictate areas you'd like to leverage as it relates to the specific things you're working on.

Ok, ok, I know you're thinking "C'mon Alex. All work and no play?" Oh, don't you worry. There will be smiles and surprises...

What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
Came up with new goals. Set up one interview for Tuesday morning. Organized crit feedback (suggestions on how to categorize our information, new secondary contacts, more problem spaces to explore).
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Figure out how to synthesize our information. We have lots of data and it will be difficult to organize it. We will give it a go today and talk to Alex tomorrow about ways he would go about synthesizing.

Anna Bethune - this sounds like a good start. Great job and best of luck!

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
We're going to do some of the Personas (patients and caregivers) and will make a stakeholder "outline".
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We obtained the discharge flow chart. We interviewed the providers--got information relating to what the providers thought was the biggest problems, observations of the patients (from provider POV) and had a hospital tour.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
We need to reach out to different people to get more information that aren't in our primary contacts-> Mainly contacts that we were introduced to while meeting with our primary contacts and also with people living with diabetes in the area to get a different perspective on diabetes education.

Carolyn Mazanec - great work; sounds like you guys are definitely starting to get your footing in the problem space. for crit today, it might be helpful to ask if anyone else knows people (in the area or out of state) who have been diagnosed with diabetes and have therefore gone through diabetes education. the DFA community is a great resource that you can definitely use for this!

Alexander Richard

Hi team, I want to congratulate you on your first week at DFA. As we talked on Tuesday, our team in particular was given the challenge to absorb a lot this first week. For that, I want to commend you for your endurance these past few days meeting with researchers, patients/caregivers, and health professionals! It's going to pay off.

I feel it might be helpful (as Carolyn and Daniel have said) to take a moment to process everything together as a team. Immersion is tricky and I understand the research you're involved with may feel dense. I know tomorrow is your first 'crit'. This weekend maybe take a moment to talk to a friend or relative you know (1) with diabetes or maybe (2) who has gone through an organ transplant just over a brief, undocumented conversation. This may help you build a larger perspective. If you're having trouble finding someone, drop me an email and we can discuss over video chat.

I'm rooting for the four of you tomorrow! Critique may feel a little intimidating especially if things are in the early stages, but design is meant to be iterative! As you know, you'll be receiving feedback from DFA fellows and others who have gone through your path in some way, shape, or form. Embrace this opportunity, it will help open your lens.

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
Realized we need to get other points of contact away from our primary partners. Learned new perspective on importance of mental health & emotional well-being after discharge (patient and caretaker)- for example, working towards a goal helped one patient feel better. Learned more about the limitations and timeline of patients after discharge.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Time (unnecessary technical information thrown at us from primary partners). Overeager community partners have conflicting purpose for set up sessions. We need to talk to our coach and DFA fellows to find more contacts. Reach out to diabetics from across the country.

Carolyn Mazanec - Hey team! I loved the mental health/emotional well-being insight you guys have discovered - good job looking at this problem from ALL of the different angles possible. I would definitely encourage you to explore that more! could be really fruitful. As for obstacles, it sounds like tomorrow's Crit session will be very helpful for you guys - so let's make sure you ask these questions then! overall, great work guys!!

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Same
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
The team met with the research team and obtained information. We received relevant supplies/contact information regarding the project.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Time constraints; it is difficult to process the large amount of information given and complete our sprint goal by the end of this week.

Daniel Rees Lewis - Hey guys - love seeing these updates!

Be sure to be precise about what information you obtained (in the 2nd question). It's important for your own team reflection and thinking to be able to sum up what you learned. It also helps with your communication with others (like me and Emily, your coaches, Carolyn etc.).

For your time constraints issue, you have a few options: a) change your goal and prioritize the most important analysis and synthesis techniques, or b) work out ways to organize all your information more efficiently. Your coaches might be a great resource here.

Carolyn Mazanec - I agree with Dan - it's definitely okay to change your sprint goal! I know we've thrown a lot at you guys, so let's maybe sit down and process everything Friday. Moving forward, I think this will be your most scheduled week, so from here on out I would definitely suggest limiting the # of user visits per week to give you time to process the info as well (or maybe the length of the user visits?) we can talk about all of this in person as well. again, great work!

What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
We hypothesise that there are certain pinpoints in the hospital discharge process to explore
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Timing, research ethics

Carolyn Mazanec - great job team! really impressed at how you're all starting to navigate through the large amounts of info thrown your way. I know we've touched on this, so just to reitterate -- I think we should start thinking about other similar user groups that we could reach out to to gain more insight about the problem space. While it's AWESOME that the research team is helping you get access to their users, you don't have to be limited to just those resources. Once you guys are less busy, I would love to start brainstorming other groups to reach out to (so like we talked about, maybe all people who have been diagnosed with diabetes recently, or recent transplant patients outside of this study). There are so many different perspectives that can inform this project, and so I'm so excited to see where this goes!
