Our project was inspired by the fact that in the United States, roughly 80-90 percent of expectant mothers terminate the pregnancy when they learn their child is at high risk of developing down syndrome. Finding out your child has down syndrome can be frightening and overwhelming. There is currently a lack of cohesion among available resources, which does not improve the situation. While support systems do exist, they can be difficult to find. PODS (Parent of Down Syndrome) is an online community to educate, guide, and support parents throughout the uncertainties and challenges of raising a child with down syndrome. PODS brings existing online resources together with networks of parents, employers, and advocates which we call "PODS". We envision a world in which raising a child with down syndrome can be done with confidence, without fear or uncertainty.

Hey everyone, looking forward to meeting you in person on Thursday. Has anyone been able to secure an interview for Friday?

Simone Stewart - I'm afraid it's a no from me :(

Brian Weingarth - I just got confirmation from my contact, she said she would love to take part. She is family friend, and her brother in law, who has Down Syndrome, has been living with her family for as long as I can remember

Sarah Stancik - Great! It's also a no from me.

Hey Team! The call tonight was great. Mainly focused on logistics and agenda for leadership studio. The agenda will be circulated to everyone of what we are doing and when. There is a career fair on Saturday from 1-2pm so we can feel free to bring resumes and portfolios if we want.
A bulk of the call was also focused on securing an interview. Each team has to have one scheduled for the Friday. A really interesting aspect that I never knew before was brought up that we need to be careful when speaking directly to those who have DS not to actually ask them about DS because many do not identify as having the condition. We also need to focus on positives predominantly and then can broaden the conversation by talking about our own personal challenges like getting lost with public transportation and what might they have done in a similar situation and so on. This will all be covered in depth at the actual leadership studio too.

I think our main action item is to get an interview locked down. So let's all agree to go through our networks and look for someone who has been affected by DS either as an educator, caregiver, family member or personally.

Simone Stewart - Thanks so much for joining the call for the team. I'll continue to look for an interview as I'm sure everyone else is. I'm glad you mention being careful about talking directly about DS because that's something I hadn't thought about.

Hey team! Joining a bit late - what have I missed so far? I know there's supposed to be a call sometime today with DFA National. Have there been other meetings?

Susan Juvet - Hey Sarah! Welcome!! I am on the call at 9PM with DFA national. I will send a debrief to the team afterwards. We need to find interviews that we can lock down.

Hey everyone! I signed up for the call for our team- hope that's OK. I have a friend who just had a baby with down syndrome but I am looking for someone else to interview. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? Any leads for interviews?

Simone Stewart - Thanks for signing up for the call! Currently don't have any other people for an interview but looking around for one

Brian Weingarth - Yeah, thanks for signing up! I have someone in mind but have yet to reach out to them. I'll keep you guys posted
