Hopefully finish coding the posts (2.5 years of data!) to show at Demo on Friday and figure out what else to ask of it -- networking
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Not sure if my codes or process are right... talked to Dan to get some affirmation... he's pushing me to think about how it's answering my questions / aligns with my theories. Dan also suggested giving a manual to someone else and asking them to code 10% of the data -- (50 posts?) to check about disagreements

Stand for Monday, Apr 18

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
-Brainstorm a few different research questions
-Think about all of the factors to consider when collecting data
what do I need to collect to answer the research question

Create roadmap for a journal article (how is it different/more developed than ICLS article), identify top 2-3 journal outlets for this project.
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
I researched potential journals, wrote 4 assertions based on my study, and managed data (DFA emails, etc). I also applied to some travel money to ICLS. I need to apply to the Global Initiatives fund from SESP.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Create roadmap draft with assertions and possible data sources of evidence. Draft a methods section to pre-game what else needs to be done and how I can have undergrad research assistants contribute to it. Commit to top journal choice based on another closer review.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Time. I have to write two papers this week for AERA and submit an IRB to CPS for my dissertation research, so this project is competing with these other urgent priorities.

Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
Added the purpose of communications to my visualization
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Work on keynote to update the image. I will do an initial read through of 3 interviews this week, keeping that same goal for another 3 next week and working on slowly refining my code.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Not being familiar with Atlas.ti. I'll talk to Natalia and use online resources about that.
Also, I'm going to try to start pinpointing a few stories in the visualization which always feels like a big decision. I want to make sure I consider looking at it from all angles so I don't miss something.

Natalia Smirnov - Great obstacle surfacing Alex! We can set up a meeting early next week to go over Atlas.TI. When are you leaving again?

Also, be careful about setting goals like "get through the interviews." Whenever a goal is to "finish" or do "all of something" it usually doesn't happen. I would much rather you systematically plan to code maybe 3 interviews, know how much time that will take (probably an hour for each one plus time to learn the software) and then feel good accomplishing that! :)

Daniel Rees Lewis - I'm currently doing battle with Atlas.TI Alex. I found some of these moderately useful:

Notes from Group Call Observation with Stacy, CC, Rob:
- Changed to calls every 4 weeks (3 weeks too weird; 2 weeks a little too much)
- Get updates every two weeks (via google form)
- Adobe connect - expensive, issues with how many accounts - not as nice as google hangouts bc coudl just have a calendar invite
- Slow internet a concern
- Also if students go to the wrong link
- CC and Allison organize/plan group calls, get updates - organize something in a big chart
- There are now 8 email groups -- based on where they are in the process
- When don't get an update, don't know what to do with them; but sometimes will give an investigation -- look on facebook or Stacy visited and knew what the studio needed

Reiterate my visualization
Use when2meet for my own communications
Begin collecting information from others' when2meet responses
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
I'm worried that people's When2Meet responses will be biased based on the trends among the first people that respond and am hoping to provide clear instructions to try to avoid that
In addition, categorizing all DFA communications into 3-5 set categories might be tricky, so I may have to redo those after I get some feedback next week

PROCESS MEMO 2-19-2016

I just catalogued the data I have for the project; I think the case study needs to include things like DFA website and studio guides to demonstrate the ways the network is supporting studio-based learning in particular. But there are also interviews Dan did with studio leaders in 2012, description of the Networking game (Ask/Give) from Cassie, an interview with Cassie and CC that needs to be transcribed, the Medium post from MSU student, just the count and admins of all the different DFA facebook pages!!! This will help saturate and triangulate the overall case study.

Also re-read Weber's 2008 paper on grassfed beef markets because i remembered i really liked the methods. I think the approach I am following is "analytic abduction" -- iteration between empirical data and preexisting theoretical constructs (Snow, Morrill, and Anderson,
2003). What would we cool is to tie practices of this case to the theoretical ideas about knowledge brokering, socio-technical capital and studio-based learning.

Hardagon already emphasizes networks, but I'm coming back to that as a key idea -- network mindset, networking activities (The ask/give game is called a networking game). A distributed learning network of design studios.

I want to also make some kind of link to culturally relevant research in the investigation of what tools students already use and how; is USER research essentially a kind of "FUNDS OF KNOWLEDGE" research?? Or is that a stretch??? Maybe talk about this with Gulu. In any case, even college students are a kind of cultural group with their own repertoires of practice -- social media in particular -- and it is key to understand how to leverage that practice to facilitate relevant learning. This could be a future theoretical paper that promotes use of personas, diaries, and incorporating users into research team.

Methodologically, need to think about ethics/surveillance of DFA facebook pages. Most of them are public, but all members might not know they are being researched. HOWEVER, I am not doing anything to manipulate them, so it's not like the Facebook study.

Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
I have typed up two personas: one for a studio lead and one for a new member. In addition, I have begun tracking my own DFA-related communications
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
I will begin visualizing all of the DFA-related communications that a typical student interacts with. In addition, I will refine my personas with more project information and continue tracking my own communications.
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
Pinpointing typical communication habits, especially when students interact with DFA in many different ways. I plan on talking to both people in leadership positions as well as just on projects to figure out the best way to go about this visualization.

What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
- Unsure if my methods are "sound" -- may need to refer to a Qualitative coding book to make sure

Stand for Thursday, Feb 4

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Complete white space analysis and writing on insights gathered from analysis
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
I updated the white space analysis to include more objective components of each general concept and used those to give each tool a more objective score
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Add tools to spreadsheet, add summation feature to the score column such that each tools score is automatically calculated

Begin writing on insights

Mostly just need to personally establish what I think my takeaways and insights are from this exercise

Stand for Thursday, Feb 4

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Define problem space that my "brainstorming idea" might fix
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
I've thought about ways that the idea could be tested & other tools/existing solutions exist that are either similar or could be beneficial
I've also documented some of my DFA communications & reactions to them thus far
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
-Document every DFA-related communication I have for a week
-Utilize one design tool to try and visualize the problem space that my vague brainstorming idea may be help to help with. Discuss the problem, what's wrong with existing solutions, and obstacles. Utilize the existing journey map and persona
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
How different tools may influence how I think about the problem space, the variety of different problems SINs face. I think the best way to overcome this is just being thoughtful about word choice. In addition, noticing how people interact with different tools over the next week will make these goals more productive

Stand for Wednesday, Feb 3

What’s your sprint goal for this week?
Working on finding a good theory to fit with the interview data so far
Are you on track to achieving your sprint goal?
Yes
What specific progress have you made toward the goal since last stand?
I created 3 cluster-networks in Atlas.TI : categorizing pain points, goals, and how goals, painpoints, practices and tools (and their features) relate to each other.
What will you achieve between now and the next stand?
Now I need to find THE BEST theoretical framework to analyze my data with! What is it?
What obstacles are in the way of achieving your sprint goal? Who do you need to talk to or what will you do to overcome these obstacles?
There are lots of possible frameworks, but not sure which is the best one. Dan helped me think about some possible selection criteria (Journal-driven), but could also use help from Liz on possible frameworks from organizational studies.
