Research Theme: Students need language when playing math games. They use language to read and interpret directions, negotiate fairness, persuade others that they are correct, etc. Students develop strategies and need to explain them to others.
With the new math adoption, the use of games is both to practice mathematics and social. We want to understand the value of games and justify to others why it is important to play games during math.
Math Content: Develop fluency with computation using a variety of strategies. We wonder if students know what a strategy is? If are aware of specific strategies both for calculation and for winning the game

2018, March 1 . Teachers are partnering with fourth or fifth grade teachers and chosen the game Name that Number to practice facility with computations. This lesson study will focus on discourse needed to explain and justify solutions.

2018, February 21 The focus for the Research Theme will fall under the equity frame of agency, identity, and ownership in the realm of discourse. TOSAs will recruit a partner teacher at their school site who is interested in learning about using games from their new math adoption as an instructional strategy in their classroom. Once grade levels are chosen, then the content and game will be chosen.
